Introducing Plugixa Exam: Real Exams in WordPress, Timed and Marked
Meet Plugixa Exam, a plugin for sites that need to run real assessments rather than a quiz at the end of a lesson.
Most WordPress quiz plugins were built to gate a course. The timer lives in the browser, the paper is read live from the database while people are sitting it, and with JavaScript switched off nothing works. Plugixa Exam is built the other way round.
A question bank you write once
Questions live in a bank organised by a nestable subject tree and free-form tags, with rich text stems, explanations, rubrics and images with alt text. The free edition has seven question types: multiple choice with one or several answers, true/false, short answer, essay, fill in the blanks and picture choice. Pro brings the total to fourteen with ordering, matching, extended matching, hotspot, image matching, range and file upload.
Already have questions somewhere else? Import them from CSV, Aiken, GIFT, Moodle XML or QTI, and export to CSV, Moodle XML or QTI whenever you like. Export is free on purpose, so leaving is never behind a paywall.
Exams that hold up on the day
An exam is made of sections. A section is either a fixed list of questions or a pool with rules, such as “two hard questions from Algebra”, so every candidate can draw their own paper. Questions and options can be shuffled independently.
When an attempt starts, the deadline is computed and stored on the server, and every save checks it: the countdown in the browser is only a display. The question set, its order and its points are frozen into the attempt at that moment, so fixing a typo mid-session changes the exam for the next person, never for the one sitting it. Answers autosave, attempts can pause and resume, a sweep closes abandoned attempts, and the runner still works as an ordinary form when JavaScript is off.
Marking, results and certificates
Submissions are marked automatically, with partial credit, negative marking, numeric tolerance and regular expression matching. Essays go to a manual marking queue with the rubric beside them. You decide when results are released, and each result comes with a per-subject breakdown.
A pass can award a certificate that anyone can verify through its public QR code, and both are in the free edition. Pro adds the drag-and-drop certificate designer, unlimited designs and a different certificate for each exam.
Who can sit what
The free edition lets people in four ways: open to everyone, signed in with a given role, with an access code, or as a named guest. Attempt caps, cooldowns and opening and closing windows are free too, and Pro adds cohorts. Learners get a portal at /my-exams/, and you can place exams on your pages with five blocks and ten shortcodes.
The plugin is translation-ready throughout, including the runner and the emails, with Arabic, French, German and Spanish bundled and right-to-left layouts supported.
Free to start
The free edition is a complete exam plugin, not a trial: nothing in it is time-limited or locked. Pro adds live invigilation, practice mode, prerequisites, a gradebook with letter grades, item analysis, LaTeX, multilingual exams, the Tutor LMS, LearnDash and LifterLMS bridges, LTI 1.3, signed webhooks and scoped API tokens. Pro costs $69 a year for one site or $99 a year for unlimited sites.
