Polylang and WPML - Plugixa Permalink Manager

On a multilingual site every translation is a page of its own, and deserves an address in its own language. With Polylang or WPML active, Plugixa Permalink Manager stores addresses per language.

What changes when a translation plugin is active

  • Each translation has its own custom address. The English page can be /help/size-guide/ and its French translation /aide/guide-des-tailles/.
  • The same address can exist once per language. /contact/ in English and /contact/ in French do not collide, because the language is part of what makes an address unique. This applies to post types and taxonomies you have set as translatable. In Polylang’s “language is set from the content” mode addresses carry no language, so they must be unique across the whole site and there is no language selector.
  • Each language can have its own pattern. The Permastructures screen gains a language selector; Posts can use journal/%category%/%postname% in English and journal/%category%/%postname% under a different first word in French.
  • The language’s own prefix or domain is respected. You type the address without it; the translation plugin’s format is added around it.

Supported formats

Plugin Formats
Polylang Language in a directory (/fr/...), on a subdomain, or on a separate domain
WPML Language in a directory, on a separate domain, or as a parameter (?lang=fr)

Setting it up

There is nothing to switch on. The integration starts when Polylang or WPML is active, and the Integrations screen shows it as On.

  1. Open Permastructures, pick a content type, and choose a language in the selector. A language with no pattern of its own inherits the default one.
  2. Translate the fixed words of the pattern for that language and save.
  3. Run Regenerate addresses to apply it to existing translations.

In the URI Editor each translation is a row of its own with its own address.

Redirects

Old addresses are kept per language as well, so changing the French address redirects French visitors and leaves the English page alone.

If both plugins are installed

Only one translation plugin can decide a site’s languages. Use one of them.
