Tax rates - Plugixa Car Rental
Tax PRO adds tax lines to every quote, booking and invoice. Each tax is a percentage or a fixed amount, can be limited to some pickup locations, and can be charged on top of the taxes before it. One setting decides whether the prices you enter already include tax (as is usual for VAT in Europe) or have tax added on top.
There are two places to look:
- Plugixa Car Rental -> Tax, in the Configuration group of the app’s sidebar: the list of tax rates.
- Plugixa Car Rental -> Settings -> Tax: the Prices include tax switch.
Tax is an app. If you see neither, switch on Tax in the App manager.
Prices include tax

The card reads “The rates themselves are under Configuration -> Tax.”
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Prices include tax | Off | “On: the rates, extras and fees you enter are what the customer pays, and the tax is shown as part of it. Off: tax is added on top.” |
It applies to every tax rate at once and to everything the customer is charged: the rental, pricing rule lines, one-way and after-hours fees, extras, the driver age surcharge and the delivery fee. The security deposit held at the desk is not taxed.
Changing the switch changes the price of new quotes. Bookings already made keep the lines and total they were saved with.
The list

| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Order | The order the taxes are worked out and listed in. Lower is first. |
| Name | As it appears on the bill. |
| Rate | “23%” for a percentage, or an amount for a fixed tax. |
| Compound | An On taxes before chip when the tax is compound. |
| Where | “Every location”, or how many locations it is limited to. |
| Status | A switch: on is Published, off is Unpublished. |
The search box is labelled “Search tax rates…”. With no rates yet, the screen says: “Add the taxes you charge, such as VAT. Whether prices already include them is set under Settings -> Tax.”
Only Published rates that are not in the trash are charged.
Adding a tax rate

Click Create.
| Field | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Required. “As it appears on the bill, e.g. “VAT 20%”.” | |
| Type | Percentage | Percentage, or Fixed amount per booking. |
| Rate | Required. More than 0. A percentage can be at most 100. | |
| Pickup locations | Every location | “None chosen means every location.” A rate limited to some locations is charged only on rentals picked up there. |
| Order | 0 | “Lower is listed first.” 0 to 9999. Equal orders keep the order the rates were created in. It also decides which taxes a compound tax is charged on. |
| Status | Published | Published or Unpublished. |
| Charge it on the taxes listed before it too | Off | “For a surcharge levied on the taxed price, such as a regional tax on top of a national one.” Only a percentage can be compound. |
How tax is worked out
Tax is worked out last, after the coupon discount, on the booking’s subtotal less the discount. Call that the net. No tax is charged on a booking whose net is 0.
Added on top (Prices include tax off)
Each percentage tax is that percentage of the net. A compound tax is its percentage of the net plus every percentage tax listed before it. A fixed tax is its amount, once per booking.
Example: a net of €400,00, a national tax of 10% (order 0) and a regional tax of 2% marked compound (order 1).
| Line | Worked out as | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| National tax | 10% of €400,00 | €40,00 |
| Regional tax | 2% of (€400,00 + €40,00) | €8,80 |
| Total | €400,00 + €40,00 + €8,80 | €448,80 |
Without the compound tick, the regional tax would be 2% of €400,00, which is €8,00.
Included in the price (Prices include tax on)
The total stays the price you entered, and the tax inside it is worked out backwards from it. Any fixed tax is taken off first, then the rest is split into the untaxed amount and the percentage taxes, using the same simple and compound rules as above.
Example from the demo: IVA (Portugal) at 23% and a net of €492,00.
| Line | Worked out as | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Untaxed amount | €492,00 / 1.23 | €400,00 |
| IVA (Portugal) (included) | 23% of €400,00 | €92,00 |
| Total | Unchanged | €492,00 |
Included tax is labelled with “(included)” after its name. It is shown on the quote, the booking and the invoice and counted in the booking’s tax total, but it is not added to the total a second time.
Each tax line is rounded to the currency’s decimals on its own.
Which rates apply
A rate applies when it is Published and either has no pickup locations or lists the rental’s pickup location. The return location does not matter.
Where tax is shown
- On the price summary of the booking form, one line per tax.
- On the booking in the admin, with its other lines.
- On invoices, as separate lines.
