Installing and Updating - Plugixa Permalink Manager

Installing the free plugin for the first time is covered in Getting started. This page covers the rest: Pro, updates and the notices you may meet on the way.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.5 or newer
  • PHP 8.2 or newer
  • Pretty permalinks switched on (Settings, Permalinks, anything except “Plain”)

Installing Pro

Pro PRO is a separate download. It is the free plugin plus the Pro features, not an add-on that needs the free plugin beside it.

  1. In WordPress go to Plugins, Add New Plugin, Upload Plugin and pick the Pro ZIP file.
  2. Click Install Now, then Activate.

Activating Pro from the Plugins screen deactivates the free plugin for you. You can then delete the free copy.

Nothing is converted. Both editions use the same database tables and the same settings, so every address, redirect, pattern and setting is there the moment Pro starts. The first time Pro runs it creates whatever its own features need, without you doing anything.

If both copies end up active

Activating Pro from WP-CLI, a hosting panel or a site-management dashboard can leave the free plugin active too. Only one copy can run, so the second one steps aside and people who can activate plugins see this notice:

Two copies of Plugixa Permalink Manager are active. Only one can run, so (the file that was ignored) was not loaded.

Deactivate the copy you no longer need. Your permalink data is shared and stays as it is.

Updating

Update the plugin the way you update any other. Afterwards:

  • Your addresses, redirects, history and settings are untouched.
  • On the first request after the files change, the plugin brings its database tables up to date by itself. There is no upgrade button to click.
  • Administrators are given the plugin’s permissions again, in case one went missing.

If the tables could not be created

When the database refuses to create or change a table, the plugin says so instead of failing quietly. People who can activate plugins see a red notice on the Plugins screen, the WordPress Dashboard and the plugin’s own screen:

Plugixa Permalink Manager could not finish setting up its database tables.

The notice names the missing tables and repeats what the database answered. The usual cause is a database user that is not allowed to create tables. Fix that with your host, then click Try again in the notice. The notice cannot be dismissed; it goes away as soon as setup finishes. Until then, custom permalinks may not work.

Going back to the free plugin

Your data stays. What changes is described in Free vs Pro.

Deactivating and deleting

Deactivating keeps everything and returns the site to WordPress’s own addresses until you activate again. Deleting keeps the data too, unless you chose otherwise. The full table is in Privacy and data.

Troubleshooting

“Two copies of Plugixa Permalink Manager are active” Deactivate the copy you do not need
“could not finish setting up its database tables” Give the database user the right to create tables, then click Try again
“Custom permalinks are not being served” after installing See Troubleshooting
A Pro screen is missing after switching back to free Expected: the free plugin does not contain it
