Installing and Updating - Plugixa Image Map
This page covers getting the plugin onto a site, keeping it current and taking it off again. For a first map, see Getting started.
Requirements
| Minimum | |
|---|---|
| WordPress | 6.5 |
| PHP | 8.2 |
The plugin stores its maps in tables of its own, so the database user WordPress connects with must be allowed to create tables.
Installing
- In WordPress go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
- Search for Plugixa Image Map, or choose Upload Plugin and pick the ZIP.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
A Plugixa Image Map item appears in the WordPress admin menu. The first time you open it you are asked whether to share basic site information. Skip is always offered, and the plugin works the same either way.
On activation the plugin creates its tables and gives its seven permissions to administrators, and to nobody else. To let other roles in, see Roles and permissions.
Free and Pro are two plugins
Pro PRO is not a key that unlocks the free plugin. It is a separate plugin that contains everything the free one does, plus the Pro features. Which features you have is decided by which plugin is installed, and by nothing else.
Both read and write the same maps, in the same tables. Only one of them can run at a time.
From Free to Pro
- Install and activate the Pro plugin.
- Your maps, their history and your settings are exactly as they were. Nothing is converted.
When Pro is activated from the Plugins screen, the free copy is deactivated for you. If you activate it another way, for example with WP-CLI or from a hosting panel, both copies can end up active. See the next section.
If both copies are active
One copy steps aside and a notice in the WordPress admin names the file that was not loaded:
Two copies of Plugixa Image Map are active. Only one can run, so … was not loaded.
Deactivate the copy you do not need. Your maps are shared and stay as they are.
From Pro back to Free
Your maps keep working. Pro-only parts are not shown, and saving a map with the free plugin drops the Pro details from that map. The exact effects are listed in Free vs Pro.
Updating
Updates arrive on the WordPress Plugins and Updates screens like those of any other plugin.
After an update the plugin checks its tables the next time it runs and brings them up to date by itself. There is nothing to click. If that could not be finished, a notice says which table was the problem and offers Try again. See Troubleshooting.
A map exported by a newer version of the plugin is refused by an older one, with a message asking you to update. Update both sites before moving maps between them.
What the plugin connects to
Making and showing maps needs no outside service. Maps, their history and their pictures stay on your site, and no font, script or stylesheet is loaded from another server.
The one service the plugin can contact is Freemius, which handles licensing, updates and the optional opt-in:
| When | What is sent |
|---|---|
| You skip the opt-in | No identifiable data. |
| You activate a licence or check for an update | Your site’s address, the plugin’s version and your licence key. |
| You opt in | What the opt-in screen lists: your name and email address, your site’s address, title, language and its WordPress and PHP versions, the plugin’s version and state, and, unless you switch that item off, your installed plugins and themes. |
No map, picture, hotspot, tooltip or link is ever sent. More in Privacy and data.
Deactivating and deleting
Deactivating changes nothing that is stored. Your maps are not shown on the site until the plugin is active again.
Deleting the plugin keeps your maps by default, so installing it again brings everything back.
To remove everything, turn on Delete all maps when the plugin is deleted on the Uninstalling tab of Settings first, then delete the plugin. Only a site administrator can change that switch.
| Kept by default | Removed when the switch is on | |
|---|---|---|
| Maps, saved versions and unsaved drafts | Yes | Yes |
| Statistics PRO | Yes | Yes |
| Settings | Yes | Yes |
| Permissions given to roles | Yes | Yes |
| Pictures in the media library | Yes | Never removed |
Even with the switch on, nothing is erased while another copy of the plugin, free or Pro, is still installed. That is what makes it safe to delete the free copy after moving to Pro.
