What it connects

Members can be associated with store content, so a product page can show who is behind it and a team page can point back at what somebody works on. The link is stored as a relationship rather than as text, so renaming either side does not break it.

When you do not need it

Most sites. If your team page and your shop are simply two pages on the same site, they do not need to know about each other, and this adds nothing. It earns its place only when a visitor would reasonably want to get from a person to a product or back.
