How the Pro gate works

The plugin uses Freemius to manage licensing. The pro/ directory is shipped only with the Pro build (@fs_premium_only directive in the main plugin file).

  • If pro/ is missing on disk, every Pro feature falls back to free behavior, even if the license system reports Pro. This lets you test the free experience by renaming pro/ to proOld/.
  • Pro REST endpoints return 403 with an upgrade URL when called from a free install.
  • Pro React modules render an upgrade card instead of the feature UI.
  • Free installs still show Pro menu items as “locked” teasers (this can be disabled with plugixa_faq_show_pro_upsells filter — see Hooks).

Upgrade flow

  1. Go to Plugixa FAQ → Account in wp-admin.
  2. Click Upgrade — you’re redirected to the Plugixa checkout.
  3. After payment, Freemius activates the license and swaps the plugin to the Pro build automatically.
  4. Your existing FAQs, categories, and views are preserved.

Downgrading

If you let a license lapse, Pro features stop working but your data is preserved. Re-activating a license restores access instantly — no data migration needed.
