Integrity signals - Plugixa Exam
Integrity signals record things that happened while somebody sat an exam, and stop there.
What is recorded
Focus changes and paste events, per attempt, with timestamps.
The switch is per exam, on the Access tab, and it is labelled with the thing that matters: it never affects the score.
Why nothing is concluded
A signal is evidence of an event, not of intent. Tabbing away can be a second monitor, a notification, an accessibility tool, or a browser doing something on its own. Pasting can be a candidate moving their own long answer out of a text editor because your textarea lost their work once before.
So the plugin records, shows a marker to whoever marks the paper, and lets a person decide. Nothing is flagged as cheating, no score is adjusted, and no attempt is closed on the strength of a signal.
Automatic proctoring that acts on signals is how invigilation systems generate false accusations against disabled candidates, people on poor connections, and anyone whose setup does not look like the average. Recording and deciding is a deliberately lower-tech answer.
Reading them
Signals appear against the attempt when marking it, alongside the answers. They are also visible on the Live Monitoring board while the exam is running, where an invigilator can act on them in the room rather than afterwards.
What this is not
- It is not lockdown. The candidate’s browser is not restricted.
- It is not identity verification.
- It is not evidence on its own. Treat a signal as a reason to look, not a finding.
For an exam where those matter, the answer is a supervised room and the monitoring board, not more signals.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| No signals on any attempt | The switch is off on that exam, or the Integrity capability is off. |
| Signals on every attempt | Normal. Most people tab away during a long paper. |
| A candidate disputes a signal | They are probably right about the cause. The record says what happened, not why. |
| A score changed after signals appeared | It should not have. Signals never affect scoring; look for a manual regrade. |
