Tags - Plugixa Exam
A question belongs to exactly one subject and to as many tags as you like. That difference is the whole point of them.

What tags are for
Anything cross-cutting, which is anything that would force you to duplicate the subject tree if you tried to model it there:
| Axis | Example tags |
|---|---|
| Syllabus year | 2025, 2026 |
| Exam board or standard | aqa, ib, osha-10 |
| Provenance | past-paper, written-in-house, ai-drafted |
| Cohort or course | year-9, induction, refresher |
| Status of your own | needs-review, retired, known-good |
Difficulty is not a tag. It is a field on the question, and pools filter on it directly.
Tagging well
- Pick a vocabulary and stay in it.
past-paperandpastpaperare two tags, and a pool asking for one gets half the bank. - Tag for how you will select later, not for how you feel about the question now. If you would never write a pool rule on it, it is a note, not a tag.
- Keep the list short. Tags earn their keep by being reused. One tag used once is a comment.
Tags and pools
This is where they pay off. A pool rule can combine axes:
three questions, subject Quadratics, tag
2026, difficulty medium
So one bank can serve this year’s paper and last year’s, a practice set and the real thing, without a second copy of anything.
See Sections and Pools.
Managing them
Exams -> Tags lists every tag with how many questions carry it. Renaming a tag updates it everywhere; deleting one removes the label, never the questions.
The count is the useful column. A tag on two questions is not a pool you can draw from.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| A pool with a tag rule comes up short | Fewer questions carry that tag than the pool draws. Check the count on the Tags screen. |
| Two tags look identical | They differ by case, a hyphen or a plural. Rename one into the other. |
| A tag disappeared | Deleting the last question that carried it leaves nothing to list. |
What to do next
- Organise what a question is about in Subjects.
- Select on both axes in Sections and Pools.
- Bring tags in with your questions through Import and Export.
